How does it work?

At Durham Psychologists, we believe that psychotherapy is a collaborative venture. As clinicians, our task is to listen carefully; look for patterns in our patient’s thinking and actions; ask the patient questions to stimulate his/her thinking; suggest alternative perspectives of events or strategies for problem solving; and to provide support for the patient and help alleviate emotional distress. Various “homework” or between-session tasks may be explored.

The psychotherapeutic approach is always tailored to each patient’s individual needs. Following an interview to ascertain the individual patient goals hoped to be achieved through the therapeutic process, the clinician’s initial task is to assess what approach would be most useful to the particular patient. This may involve psychological testing if deemed necessary. Following this, an explanation is provided to the client regarding treatment recommendations, including the type of treatment and an estimated time frame to be expected for the duration of treatment. Our best effort is always made to have treatment as time and cost efficient as possible. Patients always have the right to work at their own pace and discuss the progress noted at any point during treatment.
