What is a Psychologist?
Psychologists are regulated professionals. Psychologists must obtain a doctoral degree in psychology, complete an additional year of formally supervised practice experience, and pass licensure exams before they register with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. They specialize in assessments, diagnosis, and treatment. They have advanced training in psychotherapy and the science of behaviour change.

What will my first visit to a psychologist be like?
After you have booked your first appointment, you and your therapist will explore a detailed personal history, including when your difficulties began, any potential triggers you may have recognized and how these difficulties affect your social and/or occupational functioning. Specific goals for treatment will also be explored. While your therapist may have an idea for treatment, you will remain in “the drivers seat”. Your clinician will help guide you towards achieving your goals.
How long are the appointments?
Sessions are 50 minutes in length.
How long will I have to wait for my first appointment?
Our goal at Durham Psychologists is to avoid any unnecessary wait periods. We know how important it is to be seen right away. Your call will be answered or returned immediately during our business hours. Should you have to leave a voice message, all of our messages are returned in a timely fashion. Your first appointment will be booked at that time, within approximately one week of your initial call.
Can I change clinicians if needed?
It is very important that you feel comfortable, relaxed and safe with your therapist. Having a strong therapeutic alliance is essential for success in treatment. Should you feel this bond is missing or lacking and would prefer to be treated by a different practitioner, simply let us know and we will try our best to find the best match for you, either within Durham Psychologists or at another facility.
Are psychological services covered by OHIP?
No, psychological services are not covered by OHIP. However, most extended health insurance plans cover psychological treatment. Patients who are referred through their insurance company or for a work-related injury or motor vehicle accident, will not be billed direct, but must provide their employment/insurance information.
What if I need to cancel an appointment?
If you cannot attend your scheduled appointment, we ask that you provide at least 24 hours notice, to allow for someone else to be booked into your cancelled appointment time and to avoid any unnecessary charges. Repeated cancellations will result in a re-evaluation of need for service.
How do you ensure my privacy?
Clinicians at Durham Psychologists maintain the strictest standards of confidentiality and privacy with respect to your information. Any information pertaining to your file will not be released without your clear consent, usually in writing. There are five exceptions to therapist-patient confidentiality. These include:
- If you pose an imminent (immediate, serious) risk to yourself
- If you pose an imminent (immediate, serious) risk to someone else
- If you disclose that a child is being abused or is at risk of harm
- If you disclose that a health professional sexually abused or sexually harassed you
- If disclosure of therapy information is ordered by subpoena or court order. The therapist can make a plea to the court not to do so, that may or may not be upheld by a judge
